I have dark brown hair. I would like to dye my hair a light aburn, like the one showed (#31 on the loreal colorspa) I was wondering if I should get a lighter color, and how much lighter, if I want it that exact color. OR should I use some kind of special shampoo or something, before dying it and then dye it using the exact color I want? Please let me know what brand I should buy and what I can do (that's affordable) cause I'm doing it at home. Please let me know soon :)
Hair color? dying it lighter?
Since your hair is dark, you generally want to go with a dye that is about 3 shades lighter than what you want it to be. I personally, reccomend L'Oreal dyes, I find they give you a radiant color without drying the hair out.

use a color wash first.
then go with one tone darker of the tone you want...get 10 devolper. mix it in the dye then leave it on for atleast 30 minutes or according to the box.
the developer comes in a purple bottle.
if your hair does not turn out then get it trimmed [in possiblity that there might be white fried tips]
good luckk :]]

I would go to the salon, they know what they are doing, messing with hair dyes is risky. you don't want to screw up your hair, cough up some cash and go to the salon, it will be worth it.

For you to get a good result from what you are wanting you should go to a salon. Shop around and you can get a good/cheap price. Most of the time when you do color at home you spend more trying to correct it than you would going to a salon. Thank you

To lighten your hair it must be colored or highlighted. You really need a good colorist to do this. They will discuss the right level and tone that will work with your skin tone. Why take a chance on your hair- you wear it everyday with everything. If money is really an issue then perhaps try a beauty school where they are supervised.
