What does 20% volume in hair dye?

I called Loreal and asked them how much amonia and peroxide is in their Loreal Excellence Creme Medium Reddish Brown. She said 20% volume but would not tell me how much amonia and peroxide. Does anybody know? I need to know. Thanks!

What does 20% volume in hair dye?

Most over-the-counter hair color kits come with 20 volume peroxide. The amount of amonia in the color has decreased a lot over the years. It was once thought that the amonia would open the cuticle of the hair wide enough to allow the molecules of hair color to penetrate the shaft then the peroxide would make the molecules swell too large to come out. Newer color kits have less amonia because the 20 volume peroxide allows the color to penetrate the cuticle without leaving the hair dry and dull. the 20 % volume is peroxide (also known as developer) the actual percentage of amonia in color is about 2 % to 4 oz. of color. Professional color has even less.
